What can I build for you?

I am accepting commissions to build custom, one of a kind wood creations. Along with being unique, my work is built to last and is of heirloom quality. I do not build turned items or built-in cabinetry but pretty much anything else, ranging from bed frames, tables, benches, and free-standing cabinets to various sized boxes, cutting/charcuterie boards, and picture frames, among other things. I can work with you to develop an idea or work with your photographs, drawings, measurements, etc. I employ a blend of hand tools and power tools.

More about me

I was first inspired to work with wood by my grandfather at the age of eight.  He had been trained at the Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast beginning in 1912. Many ocean-going ships were built in this shipyard, the most notable being the Titanic. My grandfather was trained to be a joiner, building the interior wood cabinetry  used in ocean liners of the day.  He also had taught himself to be fully ambidextrous with tools which was a true wonder to behold. I learned everything I could from him but he did not live nearby and died at a fairly young age.  In any case, he remains my inspiration to this day. As a child and into my teens, I built and repaired various things whenever I could. When I was 15, I founded a chair repair and reseating business that was both fun and successful (by my standards at the time).  For the next several summers, I worked for an architect and a landscape architect and worked on renovation of an historic building.  My first job after graduating from college was in a small contemporary custom furniture shop where I became shop foreman for several years. This was my first experience with furniture design and work flow design and management.  After various and sundry other positions, I started graduate school and one summer worked at a large Boston cabinetmaking shop as a mid-level cabinetmaker.  While there, I was offered the position of shop steward (Carpenters and Joiners Union) - a large group approached me and said I would be elected if I ran. This was a major temptation but after major deliberation I made the difficult decision to continue with graduate school, followed by many years of professional white collar work all the while keeping my woodworking skills from getting rusty.  Then, upon retirement from that work in 2016, I founded Mead-Fox Woodworking.  Since then, I have built a wide range of wood products, some of which are in the photos above.
